SAD NEWS FOR WFAI

5th March 2022

Statement fro Ronnie Waugh - President

It is with regret that after long deliberation I have decided to stand down as President of the Walking Football Association of Iberia with immediate effect.

I have enjoyed the contact with most clubs and thank them for their support and loyalty. Unfortunately there are a minority who think they should dictate who should and who shouldn’t participate in competitions.

WFAI will  never interfere in the running of individual Leagues or Tournaments unless there is contravention of  its Aims and Objectives which EVERY club received prior to applying for membership.

If and when issues arose they would be discussed by the committee and a decision arrived at. If serious enough it would be put to ALL clubs to vote.

Since forming WFAI 2 years ago much has been achieved with the help of a few others. We have gone from having a handful of member clubs to a total of 23 and over 200 individual member and in that time many, if not all it`s Aims and Objectives have been achieved

WFAI is ready to step up to the next level and with a new  person as President and there is no reason why it should not achieve it.

I hope someone will come forward to take over the post and work with the current committee to take it to that next level. There are several people out there who are doing tremendous work in promoting walking football so this could be the ideal opportunity for them to step up to the plate.

I feel I have done my bit for walking football and can walk away safe in the knowledge that I have done my best to increase its popularity throughout the Iberian Peninsula.

I leave you with a final appeal for someone to come forward and take over the role of President of the Walking Football Association and work with the present committee who are dedicated to further raising the profile of the WFAI.

Thank You for your Support,

Kind Regards,

Ronnie Waugh

GOOD NEWS FOR WALKING FOOTBALL

15th January 2022

Canal Sur, the Andalucian TV station, will be attending a Calahonda walking football session at La Cala de Mijas on Monday 17th January. This is for a Walking Football feature to be shown during the Canal Sur programme "Salud el Dia" aired on Sunday afternoons.

They will record all aspects of a Walking Football session from getting changed in the dressing room, the warm up and a game. They will be bringing a Traumatologist and Psychologist who will intersperse during the programme the health benefits of Walking Football.

There will also be a sequence filmed walking the Paseo and a meal in a Chiringuito and treatment at a Spa.

Due to the late notification that they would be coming we had little time to meet with their requirements therefore Calahonda were selected as they have daytime sessions and players available during the day.

The Canal Sur crew will be there from 9 am to 4pm.

HAPPY NEW YEAR

2nd January 2022

Happy New Year to everybody from the WFAI team.

To start the New Year I am pleased to introduce our new committee members and a summary of their first meeting.

Secretary - Brian Gregory (Ex Owner Walking Football Spain)

Treasurer - Vacant

Tournament/Events Directors - Mark Bishop (Esquina Park Rangers) & Phil Holme (Lubrina)

Sponsor Director - Pete Davis (Formentera)

Commercial/Merchandise Director - Mark Egan (Malaga)

THE WALKING FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION of IBERIA elected Committee held their inaugural meeting last Wednesday (22nd December).

The new Constitution and Rules were seen as a good starting point for discussion and will be debated in full at a special meeting. Suggestions and comments are invited from clubs and members and when finally formalised the clubs will vote on their acceptance or otherwise.

The Committee Tournament Members have started work on preparations for the Iberian Cup involving all WFAI affiliated clubs and the International Tournament in October will be discussed at the next committee meeting.

Fundraising was also discussed and while WFAI are a not profit organisation it is accepted funds will be necessary for incidental expenses in the coming year. The Committee Commercial Director suggested several possibilities including the sale of merchandise with WFAI logos to clubs with the association taking a small percentage.

The next Committee meeting will take place on Tuesday the 4th of January,2022 at 6.30pm.

WELCOME

WF Health & Safety

19th October 2021

After the recent incident when Danish international footballer Christian Eriksen almost died during a game, all clubs in the South of Spain were asked to check that they had a defibrillator or had access to one during a session or match.

Benalmadena wasted no time and took up an offer from Martyn Heath, an instrument technician at a hospital in the UK and who was playing in sessions at Benalmadena. He was happy to demonstrate the use of a defib and also organised CPR classes and many members took advantage to learn this new life saving skill.

Last Monday at the Polideportivo session in Benalmadena a member took ill and collapsed.

Whilst awaiting the arrival of the emergency services members Kevin Brabbs, Bob McNeil and John Blackman went to work in a professional manner using the CPR skills they had learned from Martyn Heath and a recent refresher course. The member was removed to hospital by ambulance where he was admitted to the intensive care unit and then moved from the ICU to an observation ward where he is slowly recovering but not “out of the woods”

The cause of the collapse was heart failure, not heart attack and Colin`s three companions virtually saved his life thanks to the continued CPR they gave him until the arrival of the ambulances and specialised equipment.

Once again it brings home that while we “live our dream” we are in our advancing years and vulnerable to illness or injury while playing. To that end it is most reassuring for members to know the clubs are taking the health and safety of their members extremely seriously, ensuring the correct first aid equipment and other emergency treatment is available when needed.

Monday's incident proved precautions taken saved a man's life with quick reactions from Kevin, Bob and John and Martyn Heath`s training.

The South of Spain Walking Football Clubs either used Martyn Heath to demonstrate the CPR and defibrillator skills or arranged their own training courses with a number of members proficient in applying first response in the event of a medical emergency.

Revision courses will be arranged at regular intervals.

***** update - on Sunday afternoon Keith was advised that our member had an operation that morning to insert an ICD, a small instrument which would kickstart his heart should it stop again.

Doctors at the hospital made it very clear that the rapid intervention of Kevin, Bob and John saved Colin`s life.

The Race Is On

18th October 2021

We are now midway through the time allotted for submitting proposals for the various posts as published on the 1st October.

I appreciate that clubs need time to hold meetings to select candidates which is why I allotted more time for selection. I hope that these are now well underway and in the coming two weeks we can look forward to being inundated with candidates. Individuals will hopefully be posting their manifestos along with their proposers.

The WFAI has the format to make it an internationally recognised organisation and this is "your" opportunity to assist in the structuring and format to enable us to take the association forward.

I look forward to receiving your candidate(s) at apalmar2011@hotmail.com before the closing date of 31st October 2021.

Moving Forward

16th September 2021

It has always been the intention to form a Management Committee to administer the activities of WFAI. With 14 Affiliated Clubs and more, hopefully, in the pipeline, I feel it is now time to arrange this.

Accordingly, I propose to seek nominations and hold an election to fill the following Committee posts;

Secretary, Treasurer, Sponsorship, Commercial & Development, Tournaments & Events Organiser and Publicity.

We have invited Affiliated Clubs to propose a candidate whom they consider to be ideal for any of the six posts.

Individuals may also apply direct with a proposer.

For more information regarding this please see our Facebook Page (link below).

SECOND LEAGUE FOR SPANISH WALKING FOOTBALL

18th August 2021

The managers and members of Portobello WFC, Formentera WFC and San Miguel Strollers have been working hard for many months preparing the launch of what will be Spain’s SECOND Walking Football league. They will be joined by Hondon Valley Flyers, Pinoso and Moraira in early October for the big kick off.

This League becomes Spain’s’ second walking football League with the South of Spain Walking Football League launching their season in at the end of August.

Two Leagues and more proof that Walking Football is THE fastest growing sport in Europe.

There will actually be a Third League as the South of Spain WF League are introducing a B League to facilitate slower paced players, older players and players returning from injury.

Exciting times ahead for walking football in Spain with two leagues operating on the South Coast and a new league starting on the Costa Blanca and the prospect of a second league a possibility.

LATEST NEWS

24th July 2021

Last Thursday our President Ronald Waugh resigned his post as Director of the South of Spain Walking Football League. This came as a surprise to some people, but he has been in this post since the beginning and also through a difficult year for the league due to interruptions from Covid.

Ronald decided that he could not take the League any further and has stood down giving time for the League Management Committee to appoint a new Director.

He will now be able to devote more time to promoting WFAI and furthering its Aims and Objectives.

SAD NEWS

23rd July 2021

WFAI sends condolences to the family of Della Arden who passed away yesterday. Della from Benalmadena battled Motor Neurone Disease for almost five years and finally lost the battle yesterday Friday 22nd July 2021.

WFAI recently held a fund-raising Charity football match at Benalmadena where her friends had formed walking football teams to play in a mini tournament along with Viñuela Ladies.

Our thoughts are with Della`s family and many friends at this time.  R.I.P  DELLA ARDEN.

Have a look at how they got on.
If you are aware of any other Ladies Walking Football teams, please let us know. Perhaps we can organise a Ladies League !

FINCA NAUNDRUP

18th March 2021

WFAI President Ronnie Waugh met recently with owner Pete and his son Philip to present an Honorary Certificate of Affiliation to Finca Naundrup, our Headquarters on the Costa del Sol.

Future events were discussed ; hosting and arranging opponents for a visiting Walking Football team from Australia as part of their preparations for the World Cup tournament in Switzerland, and the inaugural Iberia Walking Football Cup, open to all WFAI affiliated Clubs, that will probably be held over several days.

The Finca, the only Sports Resort on the Costa del Sol, has recently added three padel courts to their extensive facilities and is proving to be a valued partner to WFAI.
